PBS and Church Sanctuary

* Note: I ammended this post when J.O. pointed out I left out an important noun! Thanks to J.O.!
I HOPE upon hope you all saw last night's Frontline/American Experience about the Mormon Church. I saw the first 90 minutes but we taped it so I went to sleep knowing I could see the end today. If you didn't see it, please check PBS.org to find a repeat showing, or put it in your Netflix queue ASAP. It was well done, non-inflammatory and included many voices in and out of the Mormon Church. I liked that aspect, I got to hear many voices, not just the detractors.

Then this morning I heard on NPR about an illegal immigrant who is hiding out in a church in Chicago. As the story progressed, I learned the woman was convicted of using someone else's social security number and she was set to be deported. Instead, she took her pet dog and went to a church to request sanctuary. Many people who want to force the government to change our immigration laws (I assume to allow more immigration, or grant amnesty to those who are already here illegally) want to use this woman's story to herald their cause.

So, if I get this right...the church (Christian) gets regularily trashed in the media until it harbors a convicted immigrant. So it's OK to commit crimes if you just run to a Catholic church and go hide? Or is that OK only if you are then asking for citizenship?

What? So apparently the pro-immigration folks are so hard up for a good argument they are now using a convicted fugitive as their poster child?

Thanks to NPR and PBS for the pics.

I'm not certain that saying the left "despises the church" is an accurate statement as many on the left are in the church. I don't think immigration is a cut and dry partisan issue.

Seems to me the current state of our country says its okay to commit crimes as long as a few days later you check yourself into some sort of rehab to get help for whatever caused you to misbehave in the first place... :)
